The Decisive Moment

An idle moment. Via Kay von Aspern to Andrew Wiese I came across Henri Cartier-Bresson’s 'The Decisive Moment' in the online edition. A must-have bookmark, and it's made my day. Very interesting to see the book in this form. I've held it in the flesh, but have not had time to look at it more carefully. What a treat. Thanks Kay and Andrew.

It's funny that since HCB's death, a lot of people (or worms) have come out of the woodwork and started saying things like: Cartier-Bresson was soft or his decisive moment was actually the "Trivial moment" He doesn't need me or anyone else to defend his legacy, but it's still strange how often I hear criticism about his work. The original 1952 edition of The Decisive Moment and the '55 version of the Europeans are the two most amazing photography books one could hope to own (if you like HCB) The printing doesn't get better and the books are large but not as ridiculous as some of the photo books that are being printed today. Unfortunately even beat up reading copies are pretty expensive, and I'm lucky that I bought mine before the book market exploded. It's nice that an online version is now available for those who don't know HCB from ABC...
